There are many purposes to visa US such as for studying, working or travelling. Depending on the purpose of your trip, you must apply for a different types of visa. B2 is one of the most common visa, people obtain to traveling to US.


The B2 visa is a US visitor visa which allows you to enter the US for tourism, pleasure, or visit to friends and family.


US Tourist Visa holders can engage in the following activities:

  • Have a holiday in the US.
  • Tour various cities in the US.
  • Visit friends or family.
  • Participate in social events hosted by various organizations.
  • Visit the US for medical treatment.
  • Participate in events or contests related to music or sports, for which you will not receive payment.
  • Enroll in short study courses for which you will not receive credit (ex. cooking classes).

If your purpose of visit is not belong any of activities above you should apply another types of US non – immigrant visa.


To apply for US tourist visa, you should prepare the following B2 visa documents:

Mandatory documents

  • Passport valid for travel to the United States – Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your period of stay in the United States (unless exempt by country-specific agreements). Each individual who needs a visa must submit a separate application, including any family members listed in your passport.
  • Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-160 confirmation page.
  • Application fee payment receipt, if you are required to pay before your interview.
  • Photo – You will upload your photo while completing the online Form DS-160. If the photo upload fails, you must bring one printed photo in the format explained in the Photograph Requirements.
  • Cover letter highlighting the nature of the visit, reason for travel, outline your plan in US and explain why you will return your home country.

Employments/ Professional documents

  • If you are employed, get a letter from an employer that show the details of you position, you salary, length of employment, carry pay slips from the most recent three months.
  • If you are retired and get a pension, carry your pension book
  • If you own a business, company registration certificate and income details

Financial documents

  • Latest income tax returns for 3 last years.
  • Some bank balance at least few months before applying for visa
  • Other financial papers, bank fixed deposits, life insurance policies…

Family documents

  • Documents about family (marriage certificate, birth certificates of any children..)
  • Your family tree chart that shows close relatives’ ages, names, profession and addresses
  • Family photographs

Additional Documents

  • The purpose of your trip,
  • Your intent to depart the United States after your trip, and/or
  • Your ability to pay all costs of the trip. 
  • Photocopies of your relative’s status in the US.
  • Letters from doctors on your diagnosis and treatment. If you are visiting for medical purposes.


To apply for a B2 Tourist Visa for USA you have to follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Submit Form DS-160

Submit your information as well as details about your purpose of visit. You must fill in the sections for your US Tourist visa and then submit it online. After you submit it, you will get a verification page and code which you need for your documents file.

Step 2: Pay visa fees

The application fee for the US Tourist Visa is $160. To continue with your application, you must pay this fee. Depending on your country’s relationship with the US, you might have to pay other fees too.

Step 3: Schedule your Visa interview.

Schedule your US Tourist Visa interview as soon as possible. When this procedure is done, you will get an interview confirmation letter which you need to bring to the interview.

Step 4: Compile your B2 Visa document file.

Prepare all supporting documents for B2 visa that you need to show the embassy in the interview.


Step 5: Attend the visa interview.

On the date of your interview, a US Embassy official will ask questions about your background and why you want to go to the US.


The B2 visa may take a few weeks up to a few months to process. Processing times for B2 tourist visas and US visitor visas differ from country to country. It depends on the workload that the US Embassy where you applied has. If you do not hear from the Embassy, be patient and wait for them to inform you on whether you got the visa or not.


The maximum duration of stay on a B2 visa is 6 months. During that time, you can travel throughout the US or for any other purpose. However, as soon as your visa expires, you must return to your home country.


If you want to stay longer, you can get a B2 visa extension for an additional 6 months.
