Ecuador has one of the most lenient visa policies in the world as most visitors are not obliged to obtain a visa for stays up to 90 days, except citizens of Peru and Venezuela who are allowed a maximum stay of 180 days, and citizens of China who are allowed to stay for 90 days per calendar year.

ECUADOR VISA TYPES

There are two main categories for long-term visas in Ecuador: non-resident and resident. They are given the numbers 12 and 9 respectively. Below is some common type of Ecuador visa:

Tourism visa (12-IX)

This visa applies to tourists, professional players, students, scientists, artists and businessmen.

Student Visa (12-V)

This applies to students of any level coming to study in Ecuador, as well as extending to their family members (married partner and any children).

Work Visa (12-VI)

This visa is for professionals and trained specialised workers in Ecuador as well as their families. Your company should help you with this.

Religious Missionaries and Volunteers Visa (12-VII)

If you’re volunteering in Ecuador for an extended period, this is the visa for you. If you’re working for a voluntary organisation, they should help you organise this. It expires after 2 years.

Diplomatic Visas

Visas 12-I, 12-II, and 12-III are for diplomatic visits to Ecuador. For more information, contact your nearest Ecuadorian consulate or embassy.

Pensioners Visa (9-I)

For retirees who want to continue receiving their pension or annuity from their home country. The Ecuadorian government demands you get at least $800 per month from this source.  

Investors Visa (9-II and 9-III)

For those wishing to invest over $25,000 in real estate or securities. The second type is for those investing in industry or export of agricultural products and/or minerals and requires a minimum investment of $30,000.

Work, Legal and Religious Visa (9-IV)

Most relevant to those with indefinite work contracts, in which case you will need to present a work contract authorised by the Labour Ministry.

ECUADOR VISA REQUIREMENTS

If you intent to stay in Ecuadore more than 90 days, you should apply for one of visa types above. Each has its own application required documents . You should confirm all information before apply visa for your trip by contacting the nearest embassy or consulate in your country.

Student visa Requirements:

  • Two forms correctly filled out with two passport-sized photos.
    • Visa application, addressed to the Director General de Asuntos de Migración y Extranjería.
    • Original document certifying enrollment in an Ecuadorian institution and transcript if applying for renewal.
    • Original passport valid for at least six months, and one copy of same.
    • Language institutes and other centers must present a Resolución del Ministerio de Educación.
    • Minors must present parental authorization.
  • Certificate of financial solvency

 Work Visa Requirements:

  • Two copies of appropriate form with current photo in front of a white background.
    • Application addressed to the Director General de Migración y Extranjería.
    • Passport valid for at least six months, and proof of current legal status in Ecuador.
  • Résumé (CV) of applicant, proving professional experience.

Religious and Volunteer Visas Requirements:

  • Two completed visa forms.
  • Two recent color, passport-sized photographs.
  • Original passport valid for a minimum of six months.
  • Copy of first page of passport and previous visa.
  • A document from foreigner showing services are offered at no charge.
  • Visa application written by legal representative of the institution.
  • Properly notarized economic guarantee from the institution.
  • Copy of Certificado de la Designación from legal representatives of the institution.
  • Copy of the official register of the constitution in which juridical personnel of the institution appear.
  • Certified copy of institution’s statutes.
  • Report of the activities carried out or the activities to be carried out.
  • A legalized document stating that the sponsor assumes responsibility for expenses incurred should the foreigner be deported.
  • Colombian citizens must present an annotated police report.

Tourism Visa Requirements

  • Visa application addressed to the Director General de Asuntos de Migración y Extranjería, stating the motives and activities to be carried out
  • Two copies of form with updated
  • Two color photos with white background.
  • Original passport valid for minimum six months, and copy of same.
  • Copy of previous visa if applicable, or passport registry of the last entrance into Ecuador.
  • Copy of ticket leaving the country
  • Certificate of financial solvency to the satisfaction of the Consular Officer
  • Colombian citizens must present annotated police report.

For the resident visa, The overall cost is $350 and it’s valid indefinitely.
