Hungary is one of the 15 most popular tourist destinations in the world, with a capital regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world. Despite its relatively small size, Hungary has numerous World Heritage Sites, UNESCO Biosphere reserves.
Hungary is also part of the Schengen Agreement. Traveling on a Schengen Visa means that the visa holder can travel to any (or all) member countries using one single visa, thus avoiding the hassle and expense of obtaining individual visas for each country.
TYPES OF HUNGARY VISA
Depending on the purpose of your travel to Hungary, there are different types of visas that will apply to the occasion. Whether you are planning to go on a visit, study or work and reside there permanently, you will have to apply for a different Hungarian Schengen Visa, accordingly.
This visa is for those travellers looking to visit Hungary for purpose of tourism.
A business visa is given to those who are planning to visit Hungary for engaging in temporary work or business.
This visa is for people seek better medical treatment or specialized treatment for a disease that cannot be treated in their own country.
This is a special visa given to applicants who want to travel to Hungary to participate in cultural, film or sporting events.
Applicants who are intending to undertaking a recognised course of study in Hungary should apply for Student visa.
A transit visa is required if there is a scheduled layover of a few hours in Hungary before heading to your destination.
If your travel is related to attending intergovernmental meetings, consultations, negotiations or events, you will need to apply for a special official visit visa.
HUNGARY VISA REQUIEMENT
General required documents for a Hungarian Visa Application:

- 2 photos must be attached; the photo should be of passport format – a recent whole-face capture with a light background. Learn more about photo requirements and specifications for a Hungarian Visa.
- Your passport and copies of your previous visas – valid for at least 3 months beyond return date – are required. Your passport must have at least two blank pages.
- A copy of your return-ticket reservation. It is not recommended to purchase the ticket before obtaining the visa – if not otherwise required
- Travel visa insurance confirmation of minimum 30,000 € coverage within Hungary and the entire Schengen area
- A cover letter stating the purpose of visit to Hungary and itinerary
- Flight air ticket reservation with dates and flight numbers specifying entry and exit from Hungary
- Hotel Booking Reservation for the whole duration of the intended stay in Hungary
- Proof of civil status (marriage certificate, birth certificate of children, death certificate of spouse, ration card if applicable)
- Means of subsistence – Proof of sufficient financial means for the period of stay in Hungary.
According to the types of visa, some additional documents for specific types will be required as following:
Tourist Visa additional requirements
- Invitation letter with the address and phone number from family member or sponsor – if applicable
- Bank statement of the last 6 months
- Passport copies
Business visa additional requirements
- Invitation letter from the Hungarian company you will be visiting and their detailed address accompanied with the dates of your visit
- A certificate from your employer stating/allowing your business travel
- If there were previous trade relations between the two companies, proof of such events must be provided
- Business bank statement of the latest 6 months
- Memorandum and Article of Association in original certified copy (registered with joint stock companies) Trade License (first issued and present renewal), Proprietorship/Partnership documents
- Regarding the applicant’s expenses during stay in the Schengen zone, either the employer or the partner company must state coverage of expenses on the letter or invitation.
Medical additional requierements
- A local medical report
- A medical attestation from the hospital or doctor in Hungary, confirming the date of your appointment as well as your medical situation
- Payment receipt of medical fees
Culture, sport, film crew or religious purposes requirements
- Invitation letter from the above-mentioned authorities with details upon the nature of events or activities – purpose of visit , expense coverage
- Names of the applicants (crew members)
- Duration of stay
- Travel itinerary
Official visit visa additional reqirements
- The official invitation copy
- Identity of applicant
- Purpose of journey (negotiations, meetings, event by intergovernmental organizations, consultations)

Airport Transit Visa:
- Visa or other type of entry permit in the transit country
- Copy of your valid visa for your final destination
HOW TO APPLY FOR A HUNGARY VISA
You can apply several days before your trip, sure — but it’s always best that you give enough time for the embassy to look into your application since the visa processing could take longer. The earliest you can apply is 3 months before you intend to travel. You should apply no later than 15 working days in advance. Make sure you check the list of required documents to be submitted thoroughly.

Schedule your appointment for VFS at the nearest VFS centre in your country.
Submit your application at VFS on your appointment date: The process usually goes like this: Arrival and waiting period, Submission of documents, Biometrics, Visa payment
Wait for the results of your Schengen Visa application and Collect your visa on time.
COST OF HUNGARY VISA
- Application for an airport transit visa, transit visa or short-term entry visa: 60 EUR
- Application for an extended stay visa: 5 000 HUF
- Application for extended-stay visa for the purpose of seasonal work: 40 EUR
- Application fee for third country national family members of Hungarian citizens enjoying the right of free movement and residence according to Act I of 2007
HUNGARY VISA PROCESSING TIME
It will take around 4 to 6 weeks after applying for appointment. After you have submitted all the documents, additional 1 to 4 weeks will be required to process them. The Embassy recommends that you apply at least 3 weeks prior to your date of travel to accommodate any unforeseen processing delays.
