Boliva is a landlocked country located in western-central South America. Bolivia is a beautiful, geographically diverse, multiethnic, and democratic country in the heart of South America. It is surrounded by Brazil to the northeast, Peru to the northwest, Chile to the southwest, Argentina and Paraguay to the south.

Citizens (ordinary passport holders) of specific countries and territories may visit Bolivia for tourism or business purposes without having to obtain a visa.

There are 3 groups of countries, countries whose citizens do not require a visa (Group 1), countries whose citizens must obtain a visa prior to entry for free, or upon arrival for a fee (Group 2), and countries whose citizens must obtain visa in advance with special authorization (Group 3)

Group 1:

Citizens or nationals of the following 51 countries and territories may enter Bolivia without a visa for a period of up to 90 days annually:

Group 2

National of countries in Group 2 must obtain a visa prior to arrival, obtained at any Bolivian embassy or consulate free of charge, or on arrival including the following countries: United States,  Iran,  China, Taiwan.

Group 3:

Nationals of the following countries are required to obtain further authorization from a Bolivian embassy or consulate:

     Afghanistan

     Angola

     Bhutan

     Cambodia

     Chad

     Democratic Republic of the Congo

     Indonesia

     Iraq

     Israel

     Laos

     Libya

     Nigeria

     North Korea

     Pakistan

TYPES OF BOLIVIA VISA

Tourist Visa

The tourist visa allows you to enter Bolivia simply to travel within the country for your enjoyment for a specified period of time.

Specific Purpose Visa

The specific purpose visa is the option you will choose if you are planning to move to Bolivia to live, work or retire. The specific purpose visa is a travel visa or entry visa only. It does not automatically grant you residency in Bolivia, nor does it authorize you to legally work in Bolivia.

There are several other specific purpose visas for which you may apply, depending on the reasons you have for wishing to remain in Bolivia:

  1. a) Specific purpose visa for 180 days for work purposes
  2. b) Specific purpose visa due to family ties in Bolivia
  3. d) Specific purpose visa for multiple entries into Bolivia
  4. e) Specific purpose visa for the purpose of working in Bolivia

Student Visa

The student visa is the option you will choose if you are planning to study for a full three (3) years or more at a Bolivian school or university. This visa allows the student to apply for up to three (3) years of residency, which can be extended for periods of up to three (3) more years until the student's studies are complete.

REQUIREMENTS OF BOLIVIA VISA

In order to obtain the specific purpose visa to travel to Bolivia, you will be required to present the following documents to the Bolivian consulate in charge of your country or region:

  1. Completed application form.
  2. Valid passport or travel document with a minimum validity of 6 months.
  3. One recent 2" x 2" passport type photograph, solid color background.
  4. Application fee per person (check with your region’s Bolivian consulate for the current fees as they increase from time to time).
  5. Letter of introduction explaining your specific purpose for wanting to seek residency in Bolivia.
  6. Photocopy of plane ticket or itinerary (does not need to be round trip… the requirement for a round trip ticket is for tourists only).
  7. Bank statement or equivalent that shows economic solvency.
  8. Certificate of good conduct or police
  9. Additionally, if you will be traveling to a tropical area in Bolivia, you should get a yellow fever vaccination.

The specific purpose visa has a cost of approximately Us$85.00 per person (this can vary from country to country), and can be paid by credit card or money order payable to the Bolivian Consulate. No cash will be accepted.

All of these documents must be presented in person or mailed to the Bolivian consulate, along with your passport.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A BOLIVIA VISA

Before starting your visa application process, check out these steps, it may help you get your visa quickly and avoid the problems that other people often get.

Step 1: Gather documents

Find out which Bolivian Consulate is nearest to you and give them a call. Ask about the required documents that you should prepare for you visa application.

Step 2: Submit visa application

You can submit your visa application with supporting documents to embassy directly or by email.

Step 3: Wait for visa decision

Wait for your visa issued. Once you have mailed your application and the required documents allow processing time to receive your visa as it may take a few weeks.
